What’s the deal?
There will be several different price structures for NDcaas membership, depending on the length of your contract, and how much you pay upfront. Prices at this stage are to be decided depending on us finding the perfect premises. Our one-month-notice contracts (3 month minimum commitment) will likely be £100 per month, our 6 month pay-monthly will be in the region of £90 per month, and our one year pay-monthly contract will be around £80 per month.
If you want to get a real bargain, you can buy a block of months upfront, 6 or 12 months for an even better price.
Membership will include anytime access during our opening times for 10 hours, which are likely to be 6 days a week with some evenings, depending on demand.
With any membership plan you get your own personal storage shelf (approx. 90cmx45cmx45cm), advice and mentoring from our team, use of all our equipment, tools and up to 40 litres a month set temperature firings (yes, firing costs are included). The only additional thing you need to buy is clay, which we will sell on-site at trade prices.
Can I do classes?
Yes, we already hold regular classes and will continue to do so. You can sign up for a 12-week course for £192.
What kind of technical support will I get?
There will be a mentor on site to advise members on how to use the equipment, and on the best way to carry out a project. This won’t be structured teaching, as such, but if you want advice on a technique we’ll be happy to make suggestions. If you are a bit rusty, don’t worry, you will not be on your own! Also it’s amazing how much you can progress from peer-to-peer learning and watching what else is going on in the studio
If you would like private tuition to learn a new process then you you’ll be able to get discounted tuition from Ndcaas tutors. This will cost £20 an hour for one person or £30 an hour for two people.
Can anyone sign up?
Yes, anyone can sign up, as long as they are responsible in the studio. If you are a complete beginner, we will require you to take a 12 week introductory course, but after that, you are welcome to become a member and keep practicing at your own pace. There’ll be people on hand to help you. Everyone has to start somewhere and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll improve.
Ndcaas membership will be for people aged 18 and above. We cannot have younger children in the studio due to the dangers inherent in raw glaze chemicals, sharp tools, and electrical equipment.
Ndcaas will not be the place for you if you are a full-time potter. Having one or more production potters in the studio would tie up our equipment and make it difficult for others to have access. We want to make sure that facilities will always available for our members whenever they choose to visit.
With excellent facilities and knowledgeable mentors & tutors, having Ndcaas membership is like having access to a college studio, but without the steep fees (£9000 a year!) or the obligation to follow a course or do paperwork.
Whether you’re looking to master your craft, or just put your hands in some clay and make something, at Ndcaas you will be able to work at your own pace. Come whenever suits you, whether your free time is on a Wednesday afternoon, or a Thursday evening, or if it changes from week to week.
I’m a beginner. Will membership be for me?
Ndcaas membership will be for everyone (as long as you stick to the rules!) — inquisitive beginners, on and off hobbyists, and experienced artists. There’ll be someone on hand to answer technical questions. But if you’d rather have something a little more structured, we have classes as well. We will require you to have taken a 12 week beginners course prior to signing up.
What else do I buy?
Just your clay! We will also have basic tool kits for sale but a range of studio tools will be to hand to get you started.
Why is there a limit on hours?
Ndcaas will be set up for part-time use. This is how we aim to keep costs down for everyone. If we had full-time potters in the space it would tie up the facilities and it would give less value to our part-time members. This way we can all get the cost benefits of hot-desking and equipment sharing. The maximum time a member will be able use in a week is 10 hours.
We don’t expect that all our members will want to use the studio as much as this. But even if you used it for less than half of that time, you still get great value. If you came for just 5 hours a week, for example, £100 a month still works out at just £5 an hour.
What happens if it gets really busy?
Our experience is that the equipment provided is plenty for the number of members we plan to have, as people tend to come and go organically and use the studio at different times. However, on the rare occasion that all of our wheels are in use at a certain time, it would be useful if you could limit your use of that process to 3 hours. If this ever becomes an issue we'll purchase more wheels, but you’ll really help us out by being aware of it and being flexible.
